THE GLASS WILL SHATTER

Omnibus Theatre, dir. Lilac Yosiphon, 2020

Rebecca still has nightmares about Amina and the unnerving events that unfolded in her classroom.

Through a series of flashbacks to the classroom, we see how a sequence of misguided decisions leads to an incident which sends shockwaves through both their lives.

Taking aim at the controversial Prevent strategy, as well as at an ever-deteriorating teaching crisis, The Glass Will Shatter is an urgent commentary on the UK’s politics of fear in action, the devastation of individual lives that results, and the potentially disastrous long-term effects on our society.

First produced by Althea Theatre and performed at Omnibus Theatre, 21 January to 8 February 2020.

WE STRUGGLE

Finborough Theatre Vibrant Festival, dir. Oscar Toeman, 2017

A grey summer’s day in East London. Jihad is a man on the edge. He has lost his job and his girlfriend Abida has left him in mysterious and sinister circumstances.

Heartbroken and directionless, he defecates on the floor of his local Tesco superstore, steals a kitchen knife from its shelves, and over the hours that ensue has a series of encounters with friends, family and strangers as he forges a dark path forward. These encounters are interspersed with flashbacks to his ill-fated relationship with Abida, as their story of shattered hopes, insecurity and radicalisation unfolds, pointing towards the day’s extraordinary climax.

Bold and uncompromising, We Struggle is an urgent exploration of how life in our broken city is pushing people to extremes.

First performed at Finborough Theatre as part of the Vibrant Festival of New Writing, 26 October 2017.
